Warmth and Energy Efficiency
For pensioners and people on low incomes (deemed fuel
poor) the winter is a worrying time. The winter months
bring anxiety about their health, about their heating
costs, often bringing on illness, and unfortunately,
to thousands each year, DEATH.
(See Age Concern/ONS)
Vulnerable individuals need to find ways to preserve
their energy supplies and keep costs to a minimum, whilst
still being aware of the ever present threat of hypothermia.
Hypothermia is a clinical condition ascribed to those
unfortunate persons in whom body temperature has fallen
below 35ºC (95ºF). The greatest threat to
such persons is to be unaware of the danger to which
they have become exposed, because the rooms in which
they are living are too cold.
GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT
The Government is committed to reducing fuel poverty
with the Home Energy Conservation Act, which requires
local authorities to make a 30% improvement in energy
efficiency in homes by 2010. With this in mind, Day-Impex
have developed a handy and easy to read thermometer,
which can be distributed to vulnerable groups.
The Day-Impex Thermometer is an invaluable guide for
those who need to be vigilant to the dangers of Hypothermia,
yet at the same time keeping their energy costs low.
It alerts individuals when the room gets too cold or
too warm by suggesting the ideal ambient temperature,
allowing them to stay safe and save money at the same
time. the thermometer has its own self adhesive pad
for secure fastening in an appropriate location, but
it can also be presented on a backing card (see pictures
below), which has useful tips for keeping warm and reducing
energy bills - a perfect tool to help tackle fuel poverty!
The thermometer/backing card is used to help keep your
living room at a temperature that is affordable and
safe. Often, if a house gets cold quickly after the
heating has been switched off, then better insulation
could help keep in the warmth. For advise on insulation,

AGE CONCERN PRESS RELEASE
In the last 5 years, more than 150,000 people over
65 have died as a result of the winter months in Britain
The high cost of heating, the poor standard of Britain’s
housing, low incomes, and time spent outside in the
cold, all leave older people vulnerable. Those most
at risk tend to be pensioners living alone
8 pensioners in Britain will die of a cold-related
illness every hour this winter. It is estimated that
more than 20,000 older people will die as a result of
the cold.
